Attention turns then to Friars Briar
Seniors jubilant with curling win

Powell River Seniors Curling team was jubilant with a win over Gibsons, recently.

On the backend of a home and home series, Gibsons came to town with a lead of 11 points. After a day of intense curling, four teams playing three games each, Powell River emerged with nine wins, Gibsons with three.

When points were calculated, the competition was close. Powell River gained 18 points in the final games, with Gibsons receiving six. Added up to previous play in Gibsons, Powell River had a total of 25.5 to Gibsons’ 24.5.

Now the quest is on for Gibsons to find the trophy that Powell River deserves. According to the Gibsons team, the trophy could not be found prior to the team arriving in Powell River, said Jim Sawka, seniors coordinator for Powell River’s team.

In other curling news, one seniors curling team of skip Cameron Reid, second Sawka, third Bryan Stanton and fourth Bob Simonar, played in the Friars’ Briar Bonspiel earlier this month, an annual event since 1979 held this year in the Calgary area. The Briar promotes "fine fellowship and good curling on a national basis among clergy persons and their associates."

The team came home with silver from "a marvellous event," said Sawka. "An experience of a lifetime."
