Athletes bring home medal haul

Senior athletes from Powell River once again scored excellent results at a provincial competition.

Seniors who participated in the 2012 BC Senior Games displayed their medal haul at a recent City of Powell River council meeting.

In track and field, Harry Thompson won two gold medals in the 1,500- and 800-metre events, as well as three silver medals, in the 100-, 200- and 400-metre events. “Actually, this is the first time in years that I’ve won silver medals,” he said. “Usually they’re gold.”

In three months, Thompson will be 90 and in a new age group, he explained. The person who beat him had just moved into his age group, Thompson explained. “I know him very well,” he said. “I’ve run against him many times. Often we’d be put in the same heat because there are not enough runners to fill out the eight lanes. He’s a very good runner.”

In swimming, Nancy Lalonde won four bronze and two silver in breast stroke and free style.

Susan Storry won a gold medal in a swimming relay and three bronze in individual events.

John Goguen won a bronze in cycling. “It’s my first year in the senior games,” he said. “I just turned 65 in July, so I was the baby of the whole outfit.”

Goguen said it was a lot of fun and he plans on competing more in the future.

Councillor Myrna Leishman, who was acting mayor in the absence of Mayor Dave Formosa, thanked the athletes for “being such great ambassadors for Powell River. Congratulations.”

Council also recognized and congratulated the Powell River U14 Cobras girls’ soccer team who won the BC Soccer Association provincial championship for the second year in a row.
