Seniors win medal haul

Powell River residents who competed in the 2013 BC Seniors Games in Kamloops brought home 20 medals.

City of Powell River Mayor Dave Formosa congratulated them at the August 29 council meeting. “We’re very proud of you,” he said.

In track and field, Harry Thompson broke two Canadian records in the 400-metre and 800-metre races and established the BC Seniors Games’ record of five gold medals. Thompson, who competes in the 90-plus category, won gold in the 100-, 200-, 400-, 800- and 1,500-metre events.

Victor Njume, who competes in the 70- to 74-years category in track and field, set a Canadian record and won gold in javelin.* He also won gold in 400-metres and silver in shot put.

Swimmers brought home 11 medals from the games.

In the 85- to 89-years category, Dora Ganton won gold in 25-metre backstroke, 100-metre freestyle and 25-metre breaststroke, silver in 50-metre backstroke and bronze in 100-metre breaststroke and 25-metre freestyle.

In the 55- to 59-years category, Susan Storry won gold in the 25-metre backstroke, silver in the 25-metre breaststroke and bronze in 25-metre freestyle.

In the 75- to 70-years category, Nancy May Lalonde won silver in the 50-metre backstroke and 25-metre breaststroke.

In tennis, Chris Evans won gold in the men’s singles 80-plus category.
