Powell River Regals were eliminated in Coy Cup qualification in a two-game West Coast Senior Hockey League semifinal series on the road against Kelowna Sparta, one of the top teams in the province.
On Friday, February 23, after Andy Welsh scored his second goal to tie the game in the third period, the Regals lost 5-4 in overtime.
On Saturday, February 24, in a must-win game to advance, the team was beaten 9-4.
Coy Cup is awarded to the senior AA champions of BC and the Regals last won it in 2010.
Despite the disappointment of not advancing to the cup, the 2017/18 season was a successful one for the storied Regals. The team was competitive and has attracted new and younger players led by a veteran core, according to Regals coach Tod English.
Looking ahead to next year, the Regals' goal is to pursue an aggressive player-recruitment campaign, said English.
Regals hope to host the Coy Cup championship in 2020 in celebration of its 65th anniversary in Powell River.
