Sports Day moves residents to take part

To mark this year’s Sports Day in Canada, a national celebration of sport from grassroots to high-performance levels, every WOMAN Events and Powell River Recreation Complex are teaming up.

Various locations will host Sports Day events including the complex, Larry Gouthro Park, T-Fit, Coast Fitness, Powell River Judo Club, Powell River Gymnastics Society and Sheridan Dance Academy.

Held on Saturday, September 29, Sports Day in Canada demonstrates that sport has the power to build community, fortify national spirit and promote healthy, active living.

“We’re thrilled to be part of Sports Day in Canada,” said Kerri Carlson, founder, every WOMAN Events. “The City of Powell River has a long tradition of supporting its local teams and clubs. Sport is great for our community and it is something we can all get behind.”

Sports Day in Powell River consists of a “Day of Activity” for men, women, children, mothers, fathers, seniors and families. Participants (ages five and up) sign up in advance for back-to-back 30- to 40-minute workshops that take place on the hour from 10 am to 4 pm. Workshops include judo, gymnastics, yoga, soccer, ball hockey, Zumba, Total Knock Out, barre, family massage, high intensity interval training for families, balls and bands, hiking, dance, ice hockey, wellness lectures and more.

“My vision is to have all ages, shapes and sizes participating together,” Carlson added. “This is really an opportunity to give ourselves permission to play and enjoy the energy and joy of sports and movement. It’s about being healthy and we need to be role models for our kids to become just that.”

Founded in 2004, every WOMAN Events connects, supports and motivates women of all ages, shapes and sizes through fitness and wellness workshops, including hosting every WOMAN–Powell River biannually. “It’s time to do something similar in format for kids and families,” said Carlson, who was a member of Canada’s sixth-place World Championships Gymnastics Team in 1989. That best-ever team finish was recently outshone by Canada’s fifth-place Olympic standing in London, 23 years later.

Local Olympian Connie Pulman-Tuin will be offering a track and field skills workshop. Powell River Kings’ mascot Rocco will be on site to cheer everyone on.

“The City of Powell River, through the recreation complex, is committed to providing an array of top quality sport and recreation opportunities to all residents in the Powell River region,” said Councillor Jim Palm. “Take advantage of the many offerings and take part in celebrating Sports Day in Canada in Powell River.”

The event is free, however advance registration is necessary, Carlson explained. Donations will be accepted to help place disadvantaged youth and adults in fall programs.

“If you participate in more than three activities during the day, your name will be entered to win a free sports or fitness class registration,” said Carlson.
