Elder runner continues winning streak

At 92 years old, senior runner Harry Thompson continues to set records.

Thompson travelled to Kamloops to compete in the 2015 BC Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships last month.

Already holding records in many of the track events, Thompson decided to “branch out” and try some he had not competed in for a number of years.

The elder athlete set records in the triple jump event with a distance of 3.34 metres and in 1,500-metre race walking with a time of 19.20.25. He also entered the 200-metre sprint and ran it in 68.88 seconds. Thompson holds the Canadian record for his age category after running the distance in 51.88 seconds in 2013.

Thompson’s next track meet will be in June at BC Masters Track and Field Championship in Langley.

TUF battle

Powell River’s Michael Hill (seven wins, two losses) will be taking on fellow The Ultimate Fighter 16 cast mate and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran Bristol Marunde (15 wins, nine losses) in a main event bout at the Entrec Centre in Grand Prairie, Alberta on Friday, March 20. Hill, who trained with Toshido Mixed Martial Arts in Kelowna, has moved to Ryan’s MMA/Checkmate in Vancouver. Hill spent several months last year focused on training and fought only one bout, which he won, against Ryan Dickson at World Series Of Fighting Canada.

Marunde, who was let go from UFC after two consecutive losses, was busy last year taking on three bouts, winning each.

Despite being on opposing sides in the show, Hill and Marunde have never met in the octagon.
