Step by step on road to provincials

Two-time champions have chance to make it three

Powell River Cobras under-15 girl’s soccer team has qualified for two of this year’s three major BC soccer championships with the third to start in April.

Vancouver Island cup is one of the oldest championships in the province. The Cobras are two-time defending champions and to get their third they will travel to Victoria at the end of April.

To get to the final the girls travelled to Comox to play back-to-back games. The first was against host Comox Fuegos and the Cobras came out smoking and built a 7-0 lead by the half, finishing with an impressive 12-0 victory.

With a 45-minute rest before their next match the girls were set to play well rested Mid Isle Highlanders. Powell River scored the first goal, however the Highlanders fought back to 1-1. This woke up the Cobras and within two minutes they scored and followed that one up with two more, giving them a 4-1 victory and a place in the championship game versus the Lower Island representatives, Saanich Fusion.

Cobras were then scheduled to play Comox again the following week in the first round of BC soccer provincial cup qualifying. Due to sickness and injuries, Comox could not field a team and forfeited. Powell River hosted the Highlanders on Brooks Turf field; the winner would play Saanich for the right to represent Vancouver Island at the provincials. Cobras played some of their finest soccer and defeated a very good opponent 5-1.

Next up was Saanich who travelled to Powell River. They matched the Cobras step for step and the two teams put on a great display of soccer for their fans at Timberlane Park. Cobras persevered with a hard-fought 1-0 victory earning them the right to defend what they have won the past two years. They travel to North Vancouver in early July.
