Success leads to provincials

Powell River’s Atom Development team advanced to the semifinals for the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association (VIAHA) playoffs hosted in Comox this past weekend.

The Canadian Tire Kings faced off against Sooke in the semifinal game and took the win 8-4, advancing them to the finals to meet Comox Chiefs.

Kings scored first and Comox tied the game, with both teams battling hard. It was an exciting game played in front of a great crowd that came to cheer on the Powell River players. At one point Powell River led 4-2 but the Chiefs pushed hard and tied the game in the third period ending regulation 4-4.

Kings put in a great effort in the first overtime period and generated some good chances but were unable to beat the Comox goalie. It was at the 5:46 mark of the second overtime that the kings scored the winning goal, taking the banner home and becoming the 2012/2013 VIAHA Atom Development Divisional Playoff Champions.

The Kings will travel to Vancouver this weekend where they have been chosen to play at Vancouver Canucks’ game on Saturday, March 16, during the intermission between the first and second period.
