Powell River’s medal count at the Special Olympic BC Provincial Summer Games topped 31 this year.

More than 1,100 athletes from BC and Yukon competed in summer sports events like bowling, swimming, basketball, bocce, golf, gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer and softball.

Three coaches, Yvonne Russell, Susan Storry and Cameron Reid, travelled with Powell River’s 16 athletes July 11 to 14 to Langley, BC.

Russell said the athletes enjoyed the opportunity to compete and meet old friends. “For a lot of them there’s a bit of a competitive edge there as well,” she said.

The results are as follows for the medal-winning athletes:

Five-pin bowling team: David McLean, Thomas White - gold;

Five-pin bowling team: Joan Gatt - silver;

Five-pin bowling team pins over average: Jordyn McGregor - gold;

Ten-pin doubles bowling: Patrick McLauchlan - silver, Men’s high score - bronze;

Swimming: Erika Barker, Lance Barker - one gold, two silver and two bronze;

Swimming: Robert Soumang - one gold, one silver;

Swimming: Janet Robertson - one gold, one silver, one bronze;

Swimming: Tanya Norman - one gold, one silver;

Swimming: Grayce Hilton - one gold, one silver, two bronze;

Softball: Richard Lang, Robert Lang, Michele LeCroix - silver;

Bocce: Angela Seeley and Dale Eckert placed fourth in A Division.
