Thunderbirds vie against best in Burnaby

Senior boys team takes Brooks Secondary into history books

Soccer players from Brooks Secondary School made history this week competing in the BC high school provincial tournament.

It was the first time that Brooks senior boys’ soccer team has ever gone to the championship, said coach Tony Rice.

The Thunderbirds qualified with their second-place finish at the Vancouver Island championships.

It was 14 years ago that Powell River sent a team to the boys’ soccer provincials and at that time it was from Max Cameron Secondary School. Rice was that team’s coach as well.

“It’s been a long time,” he said.

The Thunderbird team is made up of mostly grade 11 and grade 12 students and includes Niko Cristante, Brent Coe, Brody Harry, Jared Shortridge, Billy Bagiopoulos, Zane Hernandez, Kyle Slinger, Ben Payne, Adam Robertson, Mitch Needham, Cullen Buholzer, Dan Mitchell, Jordan Madden, Blake Paquette, Brandon Rairie and Nick Cheney.

The provincial tournament, which pits the 16 best teams against each other, ran from Sunday, November 16, to Wednesday, November 19, in Burnaby.

“The kids have done really well,” Rice said.

This story will be updated here once results of the tournament are available.
