Trip to Seattle brings back medals

Canadian Martial Arts Academy Karate Team recently travelled to Seattle to compete in the Pacific Northwest Karate Championship. Team member Brooklyn Vanderkemp was named overall junior champion.

The championship is a regional Amateur Athletic Union district qualifier. All seven students representing the Powell River dojo placed well and were awarded over 16 medals between them.

Medals were as follows:

Cody Oliver: silver in Kata; bronze in Weapons.

Brooklyn Vanderkemp: gold in Kata; gold in Sparring; gold in Weapons.

Sawyer Long: silver in Kata; silver in Sparring; bronze in Weapons.

McKenna Long: silver in Kata; silver in Sparring; silver in Weapons.

Craig Long: silver in Kata; bronze in Sparring.

Devin Cleghorn: silver in Kata.

Miranda Clutterbuck: bronze in Kata; silver in Sparring.

The team’s next competition will be held on January 20, 2013, at Powell River Town Centre Mall.
