Members of Powell River’s competitive cheer leading squad brought home a trophy from a recent competition in the Lower Mainland.

Twisters senior team, ages 11 to 16, travelled to Fraser Valley to participate in the Cheerfest competition which was held on Saturday, February 2 at Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.

“They were excited,” said Jodi McKamey, Twisters head coach. “A lot of them are new to competition, but it was a great experience overall.”

The squad, now in its second year, took home the second place trophy in senior level one. Like gymnastics, cheer leading squads are grouped by experience and skill level. Level one is for beginners.

“They have done fantastic this year,” said McKamey.

A highlight for the cheer season is the Sea to Sky International Championships on April 5 to 7 in Vancouver which the coach said is the next big competition coming up.The Twisters are working hard to continue their winning ways.

McKamey plans to wind up the season by taking the team to visit as many schools as possible to perform for students and then they will have a year-end performance at Powell River Gymnastics Club.

“We’re always looking for more people who are interested in learning how to cheer,” she said.

Safety is always the first concern, so McKamey said she emphasizes learning cheerleading with all the proper mats.

Girls or boys interested in joining the Twisters can drop by the gymnastics club on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 3:45 to 5 pm to watch a practice. The cheer season runs from September to June.
