Convincing shutout adds to confidence
United takes next step toward goal

Powell River United Over 35 football club took to Timberlane Park under clear blue skies on Sunday, March 3, looking for a win to advance in the Tony Grover Cup. United hosted Victoria’s Bays United, a team which plays in the Masters B division of Vancouver Island Soccer League.

The game started with Powell River playing very composed while controlling the play throughout the pitch and maintaining possession of the ball with nice crisp passing between the visiting Bays players.

United tallied the first goal of the game when a ball crossed into the box and was headed nicely by Lee Illing into the side of the net giving the Bays’ keeper no chance at a save.

United kept pressing and was again rewarded at the end of the first half when Brent Garroway made a run across the top of the 18-yard box then blasted a shot low and to the opposite corner of the goal, again giving the Bays’ keeper no chance at a save. Powell River went into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead.

The second half had both teams battling back and forth with some chances at both ends but resulting in no goals. The game ended with United winning 2-0.

The team now heads to Victoria on Saturday, March 9, to play Westcastle in the semifinals. A win would give United a place in the finals of the Tony Grover Cup as well as a berth in the BC provincial playoffs.
