Roller Derby players prepare for season
War on the floor derby-style

POW! Town Roller Derby split its league in half for an uncivil war, earlier this month.

Team Black and Team White faced off against each other in a scrimmage to help prepare players for the upcoming doubleheaders.

In addition to POW! Town’s regular roster, players from leagues on Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley also attended. Last year POW! Town joined forces with other leagues in the area to create the Salish Sea Rollers, which allows for leagues to practice together.

POW! Town is Powell River’s flat-track roller derby league that was established in 2011. Since its start the league has consistently had 50 players.

POW! Town will host doubleheaders this summer at Hap Parker Arena, Powell River Recreation Complex. In May it takes on Courtenay’s Rinx Minx, then in June it battles Alberni Valley and finally in July there is a head to head with Sechelt’s Sunshine Coast Roller Girls in a battle for coastal supremacy.

POW! Town has open practices for anyone interested in attending. Skate nights are from 6:30 to 8 pm on Tuesdays and 8:30 to 10 pm on Thursdays in Oceanview Education Centre’s gymnasium. More information can be found online or on Facebook.
