Young athletes gain provincial experience

Keagen Abbott takes gold in shot put

Four young athletes from Powell River Breakers Track and Field Club attended the BC Junior Development Championships in Richmond and returned home with medals and experiences to remember.

As Powell River athletes mainly compete in the Vancouver Island series, the provincial championship is the first chance athletes have to see how they stack up to the rest of the province.

Leo Head, competing in the 2003 boys’ events, finished 11th in the 60-metre, 12th in the 100-metre, and sixth in both the 600- and 1,000-metre runs.

Kristen Naude, competing in the 2002 girls’ events, was 13th in the 60-metre, 12th in 100-metre and 11th in 600-metre runs; 10th in both long jump and shot put; nineth in high jump; sixth in discus and fifth in 60-metre hurdles.

Keagen Abbott, competing in the 2002 boys’ events, was 14th in long jump, 10th in 60-metre hurdles, nineth in high jump, fourth in javelin, took the silver medal in discus and gold medal in shot put.

Abby Head, competing in the 2001 girls’ events, took home the bronze medal in the 800-metre race walk.

With the event being held in the Lower Mainland this year there were a lot of athletes in attendance in all age groups and the calibre was very high. Local athletes showed very well, and came home with some medals, ribbons and some personal bests, no doubt a perfect way to end off a great season.

This story replaces the one submitted to the Peak last week, which was from the 2011 provincial competition.
