The pair of small wildfires in the qathet region (one near the foot of Powell Lake and another in the Okeover area) discovered in the past week and eventually being contained serve as a reminder of how dangerous the dry conditions are in the area.
Images of out of control fires on Vancouver Island, throughout BC and across Canada show how quickly a small blaze can escalate. All the more reason to be diligent when spending time the backcountry.
While not all fires can be prevented due to natural causes, many start because of human activity. Careless acts leading to some of the incidents can be avoided with due diligence and common sense.
Be careful, be responsible and be fire smart out there.
