Any new year is a good reason to take a look at one’s life and move forward with a renewed perspective.

Many people say they want to start to live a positive life, and happiness is a recurring theme. Young or old, there is no talk of material objectives. Almost everyone is concerned about living a good life and the well-being of others.

The shift from focusing on improving personal financial standing, a new vehicle or working out more could be a result of a radical shift in human perspective. Or is this shift something that exists solely in the qathet region and within the broader scope of Sunshine Coast culture, rather than in more metropolitan areas of BC?

Most who reside here agree our culture is unique. People seem much friendlier, have more community-centric, global, even spiritual-minded perspectives. People here seem more eager to help someone who needs it. This is one of our community’s best qualities.

Noting the incredible wilderness that surrounds the Sunshine Coast, and all of the opportunities residents have created to allow others to experience it, is awe-inspiring and humbling. These opportunities exist as a result of the community’s spirit.

Looking back over the challenges of 2022—from construction and costs related to the consolidated wastewater treatment facility in Townsite, meeting and community forums about a possible name change for City of Powell River, and the continuing issue of housing shortages and homelessness—residents are working together on these and a myriad of other important community issues by targeting common goals to achieve success, and striving to find resolutions for the more complex, possibly divisive topics.

Pride of community threads through the celebration of incredibly unique and talented people who live here, many of whom could be anywhere in the world, but choose to embrace this area.

The shift in perspective could be the beginning of a next chapter in the entire region’s evolution. Here’s to looking forward to this new year, as a community.

Good luck in 2023.
