Letter: Burning ban should be throughout qathet region

It’s no secret that our home is heating up and drying out

How ironic that as I compose this letter, Savary Island just announced a ban on all outdoor fires effective July 1[“Burning to be prohibited on Savary Island as of July 1,” June 23].

The vast majority of wildfires are sparked by overconfident, woefully neglectful humans. It’s no secret that our home is heating up and drying out.

Yes, we’ve all felt cooped up during the global pandemic and are ready to bust loose. Just imagine how cooped up we’d feel living in an evacuation centre with hundreds of people and our beloved pets.

There should be a total burning ban in all of qathet region until the fall. The times they are a-changin. We need to adapt to that change. Now.
