Anxiety and fear normal reactions during pandemic

Dear reader, advertiser, sponsor and community member, I write this, March 17, 2020, to let you know that we at the Powell River Peak recognize the significant challenges the current COVID-19 pandemic is creating for many of you.

List of cancelled or postponed events, festivals, businesses, organizations, and so forth to limit the spread of COVID-19.

COVID-19 is doing more than just affecting travel plans, or at least making people question whether or not to travel. Social and economic ramifications are already having an impact and will continue as the virus spreads.

As a group, from early prehistoric tribal societies to our present day towns and cities, we carry a level of fear with us to help ensure our safety.

We thought we had dodged a recession, but the black swan we feared has appeared. COVID-19 will corrode our political, economic, medical and social systems. Happier times are not imminent. We need not panic, but we need to worry.

How quickly rumours can spread. Many Powell River area residents use Facebook; this isn’t news to anyone. They love their groups, chats, events, photos, and for news to come quickly and conveniently, and the social media giant provides that.
