Powell River athletes win medals in target sports

Powell River was well represented at the recent BC Target Sports Association Provincial Championships held in Abbotsford from May 17 to 20.

A total of 11 athletes from two teams competed in .22 caliber sporting rifle events in both prone and three-position disciplines. Team members competed in a variety of age groups and classifications. All targets were shot at a distance of 50 metres in relays of 20 scoring shots per target.

Prone is comprised of three relays of 20 shots each. Three-position (3-P) is 20 scoring shots in prone, 20 in kneeling and 20 in freestanding. A perfect score is 600-60x.

Highest scores by local athletes came from Barb Craig, who scored 584-23x in prone; Geoffrey Hodgins, who scored 584-25x, also in prone; and Katheryn Sheldon with a total of 561-16x in 3-P.

Results included Cheryl Bourque, silver in prone (expert); Kevin Bourque, gold in prone (SH-2); Barb Craig, gold in prone, match winner ladies prone (veteran); Ethin Dube, gold in prone, gold in match 3-P (junior); Declan Gillen, gold in prone (sub-junior); Geoffrey Hodgins, gold in prone, silver in 3-P, match winner in men's prone (junior); Paige Hodgins, gold in prone, silver in 3-P (junior); Ricky Hodgins, bronze in prone, bronze in 3-P (junior); Diane Sheldon, gold in prone (marksman); Katheryn Sheldon, gold in 3-P, match winner in ladies 3-P (junior); and  Jacob Astells, fourth place in prone (junior).
