Powell River Midget Rep Kings have secured a spot in the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association Midget Tier 3 final. The hockey club kept its undefeated playoff record intact by posting an 8-2 win over Peninsula Eagles on Sunday, February 16.

The single-knockout, semi-final game at Hap Parker Arena followed a round-robin to start the playoff season, with Powell River emerging as the top seed in the north while Peninsula finished second in the south.

Powell River led 4-1 after the first period, with goals coming from Ruven Hoppe, Callum Street, Jake McCormick and Gavin Mastrodonato. The teams traded goals in period two; McCormick scored his second of the game to cancel out Peninsula’s second and final goal of the afternoon.

Powell River added three insurance goals in the third period. Jackson Frost scored twice, followed by Street’s second to round out the scoring.

Tri-Port, the second seed from the north, defeated southern top seed Alberni Valley 6-4 a day earlier, to set up a rematch with Powell River.

“We play Tri-Port in a best-of-three Island final,” said Midget Kings’ assistant coach Scott Mastrodonato. “We now have home ice advantage, so we travel to Port Hardy for game one this Saturday [February 22] to start the series.”

Games two and three, if necessary, will be contested in Powell River on Saturday, February 29, and Sunday, March 1. The opening faceoff for both games is scheduled for 1:30 pm.

The series will determine the regional championship, and the winner gains a berth in the BC Hockey Midget Tier 3 Championships, which take place in Summerland from March 15 to 20.

Powell River defeated Tri-Port 7-2 during round-robin play.
