Powell River U17 Panthers win gold at Island Cup

U17 Boys Powell River Panthers won the 55th Annual Island Invitational Cup Tournament of Champions in Duncan on Sunday, April 14. Appearing in its fourth straight final, the soccer club tied Cowichan Valley 0-0 and won the game 3-2 on penalty kicks.

U17 Boys Powell River Panthers won the 55th Annual Island Invitational Cup Tournament of Champions in Duncan on Sunday, April 14. Appearing in its fourth straight final, the soccer club tied Cowichan Valley 0-0 and won the game 3-2 on penalty kicks.

After recording a shutout, goaltender Scott McKenzie also saved two of the penalty kicks. John Harmer, Josh Boulton and Will Rice each scored penalties to secure the win. Harmer was named game MVP for Powell River.

The competition features annual matches between Upper Island and Lower Island soccer association winners. It was the third gold medal for the Panthers.

Powell River was also represented by U14 Girls Lightning, who lost 3-0 to Juan de Fuca.
