UPDATED: Brooks claims first win at volleyball championship in Powell River

Brooks Secondary School Thunderbirds earned their first win of the 2018 AAA High School Girls BC Volleyball Championship this morning, downing Robert Bateman Secondary School (Abbotsford) 25-22 and 25-20 to take the match two sets to none at Oceanview Education Centre in Powell River.

Brooks then played Vernon at 1 pm at Westview Elementary School to determine 13th place at the tournament. Vernon won a seesaw first set 31-29 before closing out the match with a 25-21 win in set two.

The championship event continues at three Powell River gymnasiums throughout Saturday, December 1, until bronze and gold medal matches take place at 3:30 and 4:45 pm Saturday afternoon at Brooks Secondary School in Townsite.

Little Flower Academy (Vancouver) and Crofton House School (Kerrisdale) meet in one semi-final today at 11 am at Westview. Elgin Park Secondary School (Surrey) and Carihi Secondary School (Campbell River) play in the other semi-final at Brooks, also at 11 am.

On Thursday, November 29, 16 teams in four pools played in a round-robin format to determine positioning for Friday’s playoff matches. Brooks finished fourth in Pool D after losses to Elgin Park, Dawson Creek Secondary School and Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School (Courtenay).

On Friday, November 30, Brooks lost to Carihi in three sets. Scores were 25-22, 25-14 and 26-24 in Carihi’s favour. In their next match later that day on their home court, Brooks came up short against Timberline Secondary School (Campbell River). Timberline won in two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-18.
