While loving the many varied opportunities the air cadet program has to offer, Cadet Brooke Clansey’s heart is in the band.
At 15 years old, Brooke attends 22 Red Knight Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Powell River. This summer she is attending the six-week intermediate military band course at Albert Head Cadet Training Centre and her goal is to become a drum major and lead a new band at the squadron in Powell River.
She has attended a two-week general training course and a three-week basic band course over previous summers.
“I love cadets; there are so many opportunities even if you do not want to fly…which is great, by the way,” she said. “I love the field training exercises where we learn to survive in the wilderness. I have learned a lot about discipline. Self-discipline means I can get things done now without someone on my back. I have my own ideas and I don’t have to follow the crowd. Discipline is really leadership which, if you learn it as a youth, it gives you a great work ethic to follow for your life.”
More than 3,400 sea, army and air cadets are participating in summer training activities across BC this summer. Other cadets have had the opportunity to travel across the country and even overseas. To find out more about the cadet program readers can go online or follow on Twitter @BC_Cadets.
