On this day:
In 1960, after being occupied by France since the late 1800s, Gabon gained its independence.
In 1982, a recording of ABBA’s studio album The Visitors became the first commercially produced compact disc.
In 1997, Don MacGregor watched his daughters Ashley Roter, eight, and Megan Roter, five, lift a Canadian flag off the MacGregor Medals during a ceremony in Ottawa at the War Memorial. Don's father, Scottish-born lieutenant-colonel John MacGregor, who lived in Powell River from 1925 until his death in 1952, was Canada’s most decorated soldier for valour. Through fundraising efforts that reached internationally, the 13-medal set was able to be purchased from a private collector to be placed in Canada’s war history collection. Don and members of his family took part in the ceremony.
