We’ve reached into the Peak’s archives for today’s photo of the day, which was taken at the last Blackberry Street Party in 2019. After a two-year, COVID-19-induced hiatus, the popular event returns to Marine Avenue tonight.

On this day:
In 1909, the winner of the first-ever race on the new 2.5-mile oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway reached an average speed of 57.4 miles per hour.

In 1942, 4,963 Canadians were part of Allied forces which launched the Raid on Dieppe, France, during the Second World War. During the operation, more than 900 Canadian soldiers lost their lives and nearly 2,000 were taken prisoner.

In 1960, two dogs inside the launch of Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 5 became the first living beings to survive in space.

Friday, August 19, is expected to be mainly cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of showers in the morning. The forecast calls for a high of 26 degrees Celsius during the day, clearing skies in the evening and an overnight low of 15 degrees.
