On this day:
In 1963, on live television, Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of United States president John F. Kennedy, was shot and killed by Jack Ruby.

In 1974, the most complete early human skeleton (Lucy, Australopithecus) was discovered in Ethiopia. Lucy was estimated to be 3.2-million years old.

In 1991, the lead singer of rock band Queen, Freddie Mercury, died in London at age 45.
