On this day:
In 1858, the first one cent, five cent, 10 cent and 20 cent Canadian coins went into circulation.

In 1933, Eddie Shore of the Boston Bruins hit Ace Bailey of the Toronto Maple Leafs from behind, which led to two fractures of the star player’s skull due to the impact with the ice, ending his career. Shore was suspended for 16 games.

In 1977, the feature film Saturday Night Fever, starring John Travolta, premiered in theatres.

In 2000, 12 years after his father, George H.W. Bush, accomplished the same feat, George W. Bush became president-elect of the United States when the country’s supreme court reversed a state court decision for recounts in the state of Florida’s contested election.

In 2003, Paul Martin became Canada’s prime minister, succeeding Jean Chretien.
