Make sure everyone stays safe during the holiday season, whether they celebrate it or not

Holiday season festivities are in full swing and so is Powell River RCMP’s 2022 CounterAttack program. The annual initiative targeting those who choose to drink and drive began last weekend and will continue until after New Year’s Day.

In a perfect world, everyone would act responsibly and limit their alcohol consumption, then police officers wouldn’t be needed to ensure the qathet region’s roads are a safe place to drive.

Fewer people drink and drive today than 45 years ago when CounterAttack was first launched, which is the good news. The bad news is that some people still do in 2022.

Each time a driver increases their blood alcohol concentration level by 0.02 (about a drink an hour for the average adult), the risk of being killed in a single vehicle crash almost doubles. These statistics are important to remember when someone decides to pour just one more drink.

Drinking and driving is not a game. It’s not about evading the police and not being caught. Impaired drivers who are caught by police should consider themselves lucky they didn’t kill someone.

Drinking and driving is about being responsible and not killing, maiming or hurting someone, or destroying a person’s property.

Anyone who wonders whether their blood/alcohol level is over the legal limit should not sit behind the steering wheel of a vehicle.

Call Powell River Taxi at 604.483.3666, give the keys to a sober friend or walk, or better yet, arrange for a safe ride before indulging in alcoholic beverages while away from home. If not for yourself, then for someone else.
