In 1929, famous American lawman Wyatt Earp died in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 80.
In 1968, country singer Johnny Cash performed and recorded two shows at Folsom State Prison in California, which resulted in the release of his hit album Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison.
In 2000, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates promoted company president Steve Ballmer to chief executive after stepping aside from the position.
In 2004, Toronto Maple Leafs’ forwards Tom Fitzgerald and Gary Roberts became first teammates in National Hockey League history to play their 1,000th NHL games on the same night; Toronto beat the visiting Calgary Flames 4-1.
In 2012, Italian luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground off the Tuscan island of Giglio, flipped onto its side and later sank. 32 people were killed. The captain was later accused of imprudence, negligence and incompetence.
