On this day:
In 1939, filming began for the classic movie Gone with the Wind, which went on to win 10 Academy Awards after being released in theatres, including Best Picture.

In 1950, India became a republic as its constitution came into effect.

In 1988, Phantom of the Opera, a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, opened on Broadway in New York.

In 2018, Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka defeated Spain’s Rafael Nadal to win his first Grand Slam title with a four-set victory in the final of the Australian Open.
