On this day:
In 1897, author Mark Twain responded to a story in the New York Herald that he was possibly dying and said from London that the report of his death was an exaggeration.

In 1941, baseball legend Lou Gehrig died at the age of 37 of a degenerative disease: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

In 1953, 16 months after the death of King George VI, the coronation of his eldest daughter, the late Queen Elizabeth II, took place in London.

In 1983, 23 of 46 people on an Air Canada DC-9 were killed after fire broke out on board, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
