On this day:
In 1497, Portugal’s Vasco da Gama rounded the Cape of Good Hope on his first voyage to India from Europe.

In 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald fatally shot United States president John F. Kennedy, who was being transported in an open-topped vehicle in Dallas, Texas.

In 1986, Wayne Gretzky became the 13th player in National Hockey League history to reach the 500-goal plateau. He went on to score 894 in his NHL career.
