It started last year with a simple idea to make Sea Fair accessible to all children in the community and has burgeoned into a full initiative.
The Sea Fair Society has created gift packs for children that include a free ride pass and Sea Fair dollars to spend at the fair on vendors. The packages will be distributed through Family Place in Powell River and be provided to children of families who may be struggling financially.
“Last year we were able to put 15 kids’ packs into our budget and this year we are hoping to offer 50,” said Jenny Garden, Sea Fair president. “We had such a wonderful response from the families and some mentioned that a gift for one child made it possible to take the whole family.”
Fundraising efforts to create more children’s packs are underway at First Credit Union and Westview Agencies’ branches as part of the Friday Jeans Day program. “Money raised will support our efforts this year and in the future,” added Garden.
First Credit Union is also supporting Sea Fair with the management of the Kidzone during Sea Fair weekend from noon to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26. “There will be face painting, crafts, giant Jenga and more,” said Katrina Hawkins, community relations coordinator with First Credit Union. “This will be my first Sea Fair for a while and I am really excited.”
Sea Fair also features attractions like amusement rides, bouncy castles and more. Discount ride passes are available at Save-On-Foods and Townsite Brewing at $50 for unlimited rides all weekend and $25 for a one-day pass. Sea Fair will be held July 24, 25, 26 and for more information readers can visit the festival's website or email [email protected].
