Powell River Kings' captain has chosen where he will play NCAA hockey after his junior career ends.

Powell River Kings have announced that team captain Anthony Lucarelli will play NCAA Division 1 hockey at Long Island University next season, becoming the third active BC Hockey League (BCHL) player to commit to the New York-based school.

“I'm very excited,” said Lucarelli. “It's been a long journey and I'm so happy that it finally happened.”

The 20-year-old from Chatham, Ontario, in his third season with the club, is the longest tenured player on the roster. He has appeared in 116 games, scoring 41 times and adding 44 assists. So far in the 2023/2024 BCHL season, Lucarelli has six goals and eight assists in 15 games.

Long Island University is relatively new to Division I hockey, with this season being its fourth at that level.

“I feel like it's a great place to develop as a player,” said Lucarelli, explaining why he chose Long Island. “I recently had a Zoom call with them and I liked everything they showed me. From that point I knew I wanted to spent the next four years there.”

With his commitment goal accomplished, Lucarelli says he is now solely focused helping the Kings turn things around.

“Our team goal is to start winning games,” he added. “We're picking it up here and we're not far off. We have to keep striving and the wins will come.”
