MAYDAY CALL: Cape Caution was dispatched to a marine incident where a sailing vessel had hit some rocks on the southwest corner of Harwood Island.

Powell River’s Canadian Coast Guard station was involved in a marine rescue on June 6.

Leading seaman Iain O’Gorman said a mayday call was received around 9:45 am after sailing vessel Nordic II ran aground on Harwood Island.

“They were on the rocks and the boat was getting pounded on the southwest corner of the island,” said O’Gorman. “We got the inflatable vessel there and plucked people off and put them on the Cape Caution. We came back and got the boat off the rocks and towed them up to Lund. It will be hauled out for inspection. It took a pounding but it was a tough little boat and it did okay out there.”

O’Gorman said the coast guard was on scene within eight minutes.

“We had the whole thing put to bed in about 15 minutes,” he said. “It went well.”

O’Gorman said no injuries were reported.
