April 30; Glacier Street, 7000 block

May 2; Lesley Crescent, 4800 block
Police received a report of a break and enter at a residence. The homeowner’s debit card was taken and subsequently used at multiple stores around town. With the assistance of witnesses, a 23-year-old female was identified and charges of break and enter and theft have been forwarded to crown.

April 30; Joyce Avenue
Police were conducting patrols when a vehicle failed to yield while making a left-hand turn, causing oncoming traffic to brake suddenly. Police stopped the vehicle and spoke to the 44-year-old female driver and detected signs of impairment by drug. The driver admitted she had used drugs earlier that day. As a result, she was issued a driving prohibition and the vehicle was towed.

May 5; Powell River
Powell River RCMP has received numerous reports of a current Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) scam. Canadian citizens submitted their taxes on April 30 and it appears there has been an exponential increase in fraudulent phone calls from the CRA.
Individuals are receiving phone calls that state they have a compromised SIN, owe outstanding taxes or have unpaid balances. Scammers may request payment via iTunes cards, Google Play cards or Steam gift cards. The message then threatens that they will be arrested if they do not speak to them immediately. CRA will not leave a message on anyone's phone that there is a warrant out for their arrest. Anyone who receives one of these phone calls should hang up immediately.
Powell River RCMP would like to remind everyone not to give out their SIN over the phone to unsolicited callers and not to send money to anyone requesting payment via prepaid cards, gift cards or Bitcoin.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Powell River RCMP at 604.485.6255, or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS (8477) or online at bccrimestoppers.com.
