Malonie lived a joy-filled, positive life through all life’s hardships and challenges. She was born in West Berlin during wartime and her youngest memories are of resilience and survival.
Malonie completed school and at 16 began an apprenticeship that led her into a career as a sales lady in Berlin, first in a large bakery and then a duvet store, where she met her future mother-in-law. She left Berlin in 1967 and immigrated to Canada, directly to Powell River to marry, start a family and set down roots in this community.
Malonie loved crosswords, cooking, baking, weaving, sewing, knitting and crochet. She made friends wherever she went, from the early days at the German Club, TOPS, and the Garden Club to Red Hatters, volunteering and at her church. She touched many lives, had a great sense of humour and loved and cared deeply for her family. She will be missed every day by her daughters Iolo and Juhli, and grandchildren Jonathon and Caroline.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 16, at 3 pm at the Powell River Farmers’ Market, 4365 McLeod Road, a place she loved to attend and be with her friends. Refreshments will be provided and an appetizer potluck will be shared after a short service. Everyone is welcome.
