Powell River Kings edge Cowichan Valley in shootout win

Powell River Kings’ goaltender Liam Vanderkooi stopped 40 of the 43 shots he faced to earn a win over Cowichan Valley Capitals on January 7 at Hap Parker Arena. Kings were outshot 43-39 overall.

Twenty-four hours a home loss to Wenatchee Wild, Powell River Kings hosted Cowichan Valley Capitals on Saturday, January 7, and bounced back with a 4-3 shootout win.

After the teams finished regulation tied 3-3, followed by two scoreless overtime periods, Kings’ forward Alex Sandhu was the only player on either team to score in the shootout, which secured the win for the home team.

Powell River trailed 1-0 early in the first period before Alexi Van Houtte-Cachero scored five minutes later. Cameron Symons’ seventh of the BC Hockey League (BCHL) season gave the Kings a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. Jack Blanchett made it 3-1 with his 10th of the campaign on a power play 30 seconds into period three.

The two-goal lead did not stand, however. Capitals cut the deficit in half with 10 minutes remaining and then forced overtime with a third goal, which came with their goaltender pulled in favour of an extra attacker and 55 seconds on the game clock.

Adam Mendelson, Noah Eyre, Karter McNarland and Ryder Ringor picked up assists on the Powell River goals. Goaltender Liam Vanderkooi stopped 40 of the 43 shots he faced to earn the win. Kings were outshot 43-39 overall.

Attendance at Hap Parker Arena was 745.

Kings’ host Chilliwack for a pair of games on Saturday, January 14 (7 pm) and Sunday, January 15 (1:30 pm).
