In continuing to prepare for hosting the provincial AA Coy Cup, Powell River Regals travelled to Innisfail, Alberta, to face that province’s defending senior AAA hockey champions on January 26 and 27.

Riley Billy scored twice and added an assist in the first game for the Regals, who at one point trailed 5-0 late in the opening period. Regals outscored the host Eagles 4-2 from that point, including goals from Nic Porchetta and Ethan Schmunk, whose third period tallies resulted in a 7-4 final score.

Wyatt Trumbley had a pair of assists for the visitors, while Trevor Burnett and goaltender Ryan Fairgray were credited with one helper each. Fairgray made 28 saves over the final two periods after taking over from Laszlo Tamasik, who stopped nine shots in the opening frame.

Regals had a better start the next night with Schmunk opening the scoring at 16:25 of the first period, but the Eagles responded with a trio of goals before intermission. Period two mirrored the first 20 minutes. Brad Cimaglia scored for the Regals, who gave up three more goals to trail 6-2 after 40 minutes.

Eagles slowed down in the third period, scoring only twice, while Schmunk added his second of the game to make the final 8-3. Fairgray turned aside 34 of the 42 shots he faced.

Regals will host Coy Cup 2024, competed for by senior AA teams in BC, with three regional winners joining the home team at the tournament in March. Tickets will be on sale as of Monday, February 5, at the Peak, TAWS and Royal LePage Powell River.
