Powell River Villa faced Gorge United, the current Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) Division 1 leaders, at Hampton Park in Victoria on Saturday, February 24, with a berth in the Jackson Cup semi-finals on the line.

Villa lost a thriller, according to Chris McDonough, the club's manager. Jerod Timothy opened the scoring at the 13-minute mark, giving the visitors a lead that held for 12 minutes. George equalized, tying the score 1-1.

Gorge took the lead in the 75th minute, but Villa responded off a free kick nine minutes later to set the stage for the dramatic penalty shootout. See Kim Leach's video of Chris Fisher's tying goal below:

"It was probably one of our best games in recent memory, finishing regulation time tied 2-2," said McDonough. "Unfortunately we couldn’t quite it done in the penalty shoutout,"

Focus now turns to survival in Div 1 with a massive game this Saturday at Timberlane vs Westcastle.

The Jackson Cup is VISL’s version of the FA Cup in England and has been contested since 1915. Villa hoisted the trophy in 1991, 1995, 1997 and 2000.

With the Jackson Cup run over, Villa's focus now turns to regular VISL play at home versus Westcastle. McDonough said it is a massive game with survival in Division 1 at stake.

Powell River is currently ninth in the 10-team division, three points behind Victoria Highlanders for eighth place.
