June is Pride month, an event steeped in history that carries with it joy, pain, anger and profound importance for so many people in BC each year.

After months of tumbleweeds rolling down empty city streets, those same streets are now filled with people seeking to be heard and to breathe — and not because of loosening pandemic restrictions.

I support Janine MacLeod’s viewpoint [“ Water is Life ,” June 11,] as it concerns Toba Inlet water bottling and the interaction of sweet water and saline waters. Important ecosystem energy/nutrient transfer processes occur here.

Now that Island Discovery has made her maiden voyage, taking over the BC Ferries route between Texada Island and Powell River, the region boasts two of the newest, and one of the more modern ferries in the entire fleet.

It has come to my attention that [City of Powell River] council is considering a bylaw amendment to allow surface water extraction by bottled water companies in the Toba Inlet area. I am writing to express my vehement opposition to this proposal.

At this moment in time, it’s hard to wake up in the morning or go about your day without being overwhelmed by negative news.
