AfterGlow Hair Lounge is celebrating 10 years of great style with a fundraiser for the Powell River Food Bank.

Friends and customers of the salon will be encouraged to drop off food donations in April.

“We’re really excited about it,” Holly Barnes, the owner and lead stylist for AfterGlow, says.

“I was inspired to put this fundraiser together after learning food banks often suffer the most after Christmas. People are very aware of them leading up to the holidays, but once they’re depleted in the new year, they struggle for donations.”

The fundraiser is an opportunity for Barnes to give back to the community that supported her business during a difficult period.

“I have to thank my staff and the community of Powell River for being so supportive during this time,” Barnes says.

“We have such an amazing client base in Powell River supporting us through everything and that has been instrumental during this time.”

AfterGlow started as a one-chair salon in 2011, with Barnes working from the back of Simply Bronze, the tanning salon. From there, Barnes expanded to its current location on Alberni Street in 2014.

The full-service salon offers modern styling techniques. They specialize in bridal styling and aesthetics and colour services.

AfterGlow has resumed full operations inside the salon with enhanced health and safety precautions, including safe distancing and full cleaning and disinfecting in between customers.

Barnes always knew she wanted to be a hair stylist from a young age. After graduating from hair school in Victoria, she apprenticed at several salons before making her way back to Powell River.

While she thought briefly about taking a hiatus and pursuing something else, clients kept calling about getting their hair done and with the encouragement of friends and family, Barnes started AfterGlow.

“I enjoy the challenge, I enjoy doing something different and I enjoy learning. We’re always changing, growing, learning and adapting to trends,” Barnes says.

“Every head of hair is unique, every person is unique and we get to see people for who they are and what we can give them. We get to make people feel good about themselves every day.”
