A diverse lineup of artists, musicians and food vendors will display their talents in the open air at Willingdon Beach this weekend for the 17th instalment of Arts Alive in the Park.

“We’re anticipating the biggest ever, in terms of things to see, and it looks like the weather is going to do Goldilocks proud:  not too hot, not too cool, but just right,” says co-organizer Ann Nelson, who has curated the event’s unique atmosphere since the very beginning.

Upwards of 50 artisans and 10 food vendors are slated to participate this year, including local painter Joyce Furness.

“What I really like about Arts Alive is that it’s not restrictive," says Furness, "so you can have your tent and move your tables out and expand your show area. It’s very laid back and relaxed.”

A specialist in watercolours and acrylics, Furness has lost count of how many years she has set up a booth at the event.

“Probably about seven or eight,” she says. “This and the Powell River Studio Tour are really good venues for the artists, as there aren’t that many opportunities to show your work to such an extent.”

Many artisans see Arts Alive as a welcome break from their indoor studios and gallery spaces, in spite of the obvious challenges that can sometimes descend from above. If the rain comes out, they put their stuff in the tent and squish in, and when the sun comes out they move it out again.

Along with the variety of artists’ wares and demonstrations, musical entertainment offers an eclectic accompaniment for the entire weekend.

“On stage we have some very familiar voices and faces, and some brand new ones this year,” says Nelson.

This year’s lineup includes jazz band Retro and a who’s-who of local singer/songwriters and musicians, including Phil Williams; Old Enough To Know Better with Scott Ritter, Geoff Allan and Shaun Coburn; and Randy Pinchbeck.

The event’s true spirit is created by the sum of its individual parts, a combination that never fails to set Nelson’s heart aflutter when set-up begins on Saturday morning.

“It’s always  exciting when they all start arriving," says Nelson, "and bring that huge diversity of disciplines and media together for the weekend."
