Powell River Outrigger Canoe Society coach and racing coordinator Michael Matthews contributed today’s featured image of team members at a local practice. Eight local paddlers are representing Canada in the 2022 IVF World Sprint Championships, which start today and continue until August 16 at the Olympic Rowing Centre in London, England.

On this day:
In 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte set sail for the island of St. Helena in the Atlantic Ocean, where he remained in exile until his death in 1821.

In 1918, Canadian and Australian troops fought Germans in the World War I Battle of Amiens over four days, and were victorious, although Canadian casualties were high, with more than 11,800 killed or injured.

In 1974, United States president Richard Nixon announced he would resign the next day amid damaging Watergate scandal revelations.
