On this day:
In 1775, during the American Revolutionary War, the American Continental Army was defeated, and its general Richard Montgomery was killed, while trying to capture Quebec City. 

In 1857, Ottawa was selected as the new capital city of the Province of Canada by Queen Victoria. It wasn’t until 1866 that Ottawa was officially designated the capital city and began to hold Parliament. Previous capitals: Kingston (1841-1844); Montreal (1844-1849); Toronto (1849-1851); Quebec City (1851-1855); Toronto (1855-1859); Quebec City (1859-1865).

In 1904, Times Square in New York City hosted its first New Year's Eve celebration.

In 1946, United States president Harry Truman proclaimed the end of World War II.

In 1961, the Beach Boys performed as a group for the first time under the moniker.

In 1966, the Monkees’ hit song "I'm a Believer" reached number one on music charts, where it remained for seven weeks.

In 1988, in an 8-6 win over New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Penguins star Mario Lemieux scored at even strength, on a power play, while shorthanded, on a penalty shot and into an empty net to seal the win. In addition to scoring the five goals, he assisted on the other three for an eight-point night.
