On this day:
In 1882, German scientist Robert Koch announced the discovery of the bacillus responsible for tuberculosis.

In 1958, singer Elvis Presley was inducted into the United States Army. He attended basic training in Texas before being assigned to a unit in Germany.

In 1989, the Exxon Valdez supertanker began leaking an estimated 11 million gallons of crude oil, which killed up to 250,000 seabirds and other wildlife, after running aground in Alaska’s Prince William Sound.
