Powell River RCMP reported the following for May 5 to 11, 2021.

Total calls for service: 133
Thefts: 5
Assaults: 1
Impaired driving: 4
Mischief: 7
Break and enter: 2

May 5; Kemano Street
A bicycle found in a residential driveway was turned in at the Powell River RCMP detachment. It was discovered at the residence on May 2 and the homeowner does not know where the bike came from. If the owner can provide a description including the make, model, colour and possibly serial number, the bike can be claimed at the detachment. RCMP would like to remind everyone that found bicycles are often turned in to police and to call 604.485.6255 to make an enquiry.

May 7; Ontario Avenue, 4900 block
Police received a report of a theft outside of a residence that occurred on April 30, 2021. The owner reported that while in the process of moving, a large box full of unique shoes was taken from outside the unit.

May 10; Barnet Street, 7100 block
At approximately 11:20 pm, police observed a scooter leave the parking lot of the Town Centre mall. RCMP observed the driver weaving in the lane and having trouble keeping balance. A traffic stop was initiated and the male driver was identified. After speaking to the driver, police detected signs of impairment by drug. A standard field sobriety test was conducted and as a result, the driver was arrested for impaired driving and given a 24-hour prohibition. BC Court of Appeal has upheld a BC Supreme Court ruling that e-bikes designed to look and function more like mopeds or scooters do not meet the province’s definition of a motor-assisted cycle that is primarily human powered, and therefore require a driver’s licence, registration and insurance. This is regardless of whether the pedals are on or not.

May 12; Glacier Street, 7000 block
Powell River RCMP received a report of vandalism to the garden at Assumption School, which occurred sometime over this past weekend between May 7 and 9, 2021. The garden gate lock was cut and various plants were dug up and thrown about. School staff members are disappointed as the garden is used by students to plant vegetables.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Powell River RCMP at 604.485.6255, or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS (8477) or online at bccrimestoppers.com.
