Powell River RCMP members are investigating incidents that took place during a memorial ride that featured a variety of vehicles touring city streets on August 18.

According to a media release from staff sergeant Rod Wiebe, from vehicles performing “smoke shows” and the smell of burning rubber, to revving engines to driving on the wrong side of the road, the annual Super Dave Rod Run resulted in several complaints to police.

“While most residents can appreciate the memorial part of the run, the continued poor decision making by a select few vehicles casts a shadow over the event,” stated Wiebe. “The risk this poses is significant considering that some areas of the ride route had families with children on the sidewalks watching. Spinning tires to this extent is considered stunting and can result in the impoundment of the vehicle for seven days.”

In response to some social media posts, RCMP has indicated it did not sanction the event, nor can it, given some of the antics that take place. No permits were issued for the event by the city, according to the release.

“The investigation into the matter is continuing,” stated Wiebe, “and police are asking that anyone with cell phone or dash cam footage of any of the erratic driving to please contact the detachment.”
