Forget about the federal election for a moment, at least until the end of this article. Another election is coming up.

Three years ago, the inaugural Powell River Sports Hall of Fame gala was held. From more than 20 nominated teams and individuals, the first nine members were selected.

The class of 2019 included the 1969/1970 Canadian champion (Hardy Cup) Powell River Regals hockey team; soccer and boxing athlete Les Adams; track and field pioneer Gino Bortolussi; hockey player Bob Crawford; soccer player Drew Ferguson; football players Roy and Ted Gerela; hockey player Gary Lupul; and 1984 Olympic track and field athlete Connie Polman Tuin.

Nominations for the class of 2022 are open until the end of October. There is no shortage of accomplishments by qathet region individuals and teams over the years to reflect on, which should make the selection/election process for this year’s sports hall of fame committee just as difficult as it was in 2019.

We have a Stanley Cup winner, a world curling champion and a national titlist in wrestling, to name a few individual sporting feats, as well as several amateur teams that have had success at the provincial level. In the interest of fairness, we’ll refrain from presenting those names, as obvious as they may be.

Other than the nine inductees from three years ago, who do you think should enter the hall this time around?

The choices are abundant and interesting to reflect on, perhaps more so than deciding whether to choose Conservative, Green, Liberal, Marxist-Leninist, Maverick, NDP or People's Party in the North Island-Powell River riding. What would you rather talk about around the water cooler?
